Amazingly, God said first the natural then the spiritual (1 Corinthians 15:46). Therefore we who aspire to be spiritual should first consider the complex and intricate organism called the human body within which God houses our spirit (James 2:26). Our body is the temple in which God by His Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; 2 Corinthians 6:16). Sacrifice and offering God has not desired, but a body He has prepared (Hebrews 10:5).

Are you honoring God with your body? Is your temple worthy of housing the Lord’s glory and Presence? God does not live in buildings made with hands. He wants to live inside of you (Acts 7:48-49). A major part of your personal testimony as to your spirituality is found in how you care for your temple. The world does not see God, nor His Spirit (John 14:17). You are the living epistle that society beholds before it considers the God that you profess (2 Corinthians 3:3). Does your physical body represent well the God you espouse?
Are you projecting a God of strength or weakness? Your body is a billboard for all to read. When the world that walks by sight not by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), sees you, what message do they hear? When are your desires going to align and coincide with God’s desires? God desires above all things that you be in health (3 John 1:2). Knowing this can you honestly say your health is your top priority? Many seek first to financially prosper and in so doing neglect their health. Ironically, they shall eventually have to spend all their accumulated wealth to regain their health. Wouldn’t it be easier to just properly prioritize health before wealth from the beginning?

You are God’s building (1 Corinthians 3:9). Physically what kind of structure and edifice are you? Are you a rickety shack deteriorating or are you a citadel fortified to endure the test of time? How are your eating habits? Do you graze like a cow or eat like a thoroughbred? Do you eat for pleasure or feed for purpose?

Is your caloric intake causing pain or producing power? Is your body groaning beneath a heavy load of toxicity or gleeful because of proper diet and nutritional supplementation? These are vital questions that we all must ask ourselves as we are stewards of the body God has given us. Are you being faithful or foolish with the body God has entrusted to you?

The body is a complex organism that has the ability to heal itself - if only you listen to it and respond with proper nourishment and care. In spite of all the abuse our bodies endure - whether through exposure to environmental toxins, poor nutrition, cigarette smoke, alcohol consumption, or inactivity - they still usually serve us well for many years before signs of illness may start to appear. Even then, with a little help, they respond and continue to function. Indeed, God created the body to wonderfully work and fearlessly function (Psalm 139:14).

The human body is the greatest machine on earth. Yet it remains the most neglected and taken for granted piece of equipment we most frequently use. Imagine how long your car would work if you didn’t regularly service it, change the oil, put air in the tires, and use the proper fuel. Sadly we give more time, care and attention to our other machines in an attempt to prolong their life than we give to our very own bodies. Is it any wonder people are ridden with disease and illnesses and dying prematurely?

Think of your body as being composed of millions of tiny little engines. Some of these engines work in unison; some work independently. All are on call twenty-four hours a day. In order for the engines to work properly, they require specific fuels. If the type of fuel given is the wrong blend, the engine will not perform to its maximum capacity. If the fuel is of a poor grade, the engine may sputter, hesitate, and lose power. If the engine is given no fuel at all, it will stop.

The fuel we give our bodies’ engines comes directly from the things we consume. The foods we eat contain nutrients. These nutrients come in the form of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, water, amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. It is these nutrients that sustain life by providing us with basic materials our bodies need to carry on their daily functions.

Individual nutrients differ in form and function, and in the amount needed by the body; however, they are all vital to our health. Nutrients are involved in all body processes, from combating infection to repairing tissue to thinking. Although nutrients have different specific functions, their common function is to keep us going.

Each part of the body contains high concentrations of certain nutrients. A deficiency of those nutrients will cause the body part to malfunction and eventually break down - and, like dominos, other body parts will follow. To keep this from happening, we need a proper diet and appropriate nutritional supplements. Brain function, memory, skin elasticity, eyesight, energy, the ratio of lean to fat tissue in the body, and overall health are all indications of how well the body is functioning. With the help of the proper nutrients, exercise, and a balanced diet, we can slow the aging process, live stronger, longer, healthier lives.

If we do not give ourselves the proper nutrients, we can impair the body’s normal functions and cause ourselves great harm. Even if we show no signs of illness, we may not necessarily be healthy. We just are not yet exhibiting any overt symptoms of illness. Most of us do not get the nutrients we need from our diets because most of the foods we consume are cooked and/or processed. Cooking at high temperatures and processing destroy vital nutrients and enzymes the body needs to function properly. The organic raw foods that supply these elements are largely missing from today’s diet. Modern farming techniques and soil depletion also minimizes and greatly lessens the amount of nutrients and minerals we intake.

Phytochemicals are compounds present in plants that make the plants biologically active. They are what determines a plant’s color, flavor, and ability to resist disease. Researchers have identified literally thousands of phytochemicals and also have developed the technology to extract these chemical compounds and concentrate them into pills, powders, and capsules. These are called nutraceuticals - the newest type of dietary supplement.

Your body’s nutritional needs are as unique to you as your appearance is. The first essential step toward wellness, therefore, is to be sure you are getting the correct amounts of the proper nutrients. Eating a healthy diet and supplementing your meals with appropriate nutrients will help to assure that your organs, cells, and tissues get the fuel they need to operate properly.

As a personal fitness trainer and nutritional consultant I take great pride in caring for my body. Being at my personal best physically is important to me. The time allotted toward exercise and good health is an investment not an expense. Eating healthy costs no more than eating poorly. The question is where do you want spend your hard earned money?

I prefer to daily invest in good health and nutrition rather than have to dig myself out of an early grave with enormous doctor and hospital visits, coupled with synthetic pharmaceuticals that serve only to weaken my immune system and make me more dependent upon doctors. Sadly many are digging themselves an early grave with their fork in hand and the wrong foods on their plate.  The results and rewards of regular exercise and proper diet speak for themselves: greater confidence, higher energy level, increased endurance, peak performance, keen mental clarity, self-awareness, freedom of expression, spiritual sensitivity, and creativity.

Nobody cares more about you than you. Why not invest in yourself before extending yourself outward and spreading yourself too thin. We all have a breaking point. Wouldn’t it be far better to build proper health than experience a devastating breakdown because of the lack of it? Give your body a tune-up enabling it to heal and invigorate itself.

As a minister to Christ’s body the Church and the nation within which I live, I am embarrassed when I see how fat the body of Christ is and greatly concerned with the staggering levels of obesity in the United States. We are a nation overfed and yet starving from malnourishment. America is as guilty as Sodom for its gluttony, laziness and pride (Ezekiel 16:49).

Many of our Pastors and Priests would do well to go on a juice fast for a week and exercise. The "fullness of the blessing of Christ" isn’t talking about a bulging belly and out-of-control waste line (Romans 15:29). "Like people, like priest" (Hosea 4:9). It’s time preachers in our pulpits gave attention to their health lest their church members follow in their fellowship’s father’s footsteps toward becoming fat. A little less fat around the mid-section would make for some more energized prayer sessions rather than an overly burdened skeleton dropping into a deep sleep during the hour of prayer.

The world is a dim reflection of the church. Jesus said we His people are "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). Is it any wonder when we don’t walk in the light as Christ is in the light that the world around us remains in darkness? Judgment therefore will begin in the house of God as it is our responsibility to be a voice to the nation and lead them out of darkness (1 Peter 4:17). Jesus came to give us life more abundantly (John 10:10). We however in the body of Christ have acted as if Jesus came just to give us church. Thus we have become inactive and fat both spiritually and physically. Is it any wonder the Church cannot fulfill its missionary mandate to the nation and the world. It is too fat to get off of the pew!  Jesus rose from the dead, but we with our constipated colons cannot get out of bed.

Controlling industries and lobby groups (Tobacco, Alcohol, Pharmaceutical, Doctors/Health Care) prove that our governing body does not support a healthy country but rather a healthy economy – that at the expense of its peoples health. The typical American diet is devoid of fruits and vegetables. Living foods are not eaten regularly. We are what we eat. Therefore our people are sick, suffering, and shortening their lifespan as they indulge in processed, canned, cooked and frozen foods.

God gave dietary laws to Moses in the Old Testament for the explicit purpose of securing our health by reason of outlining guidelines for good health and appropriate foods to eat. This is not about a rigid legalistic adherence to the law which is good and useful (Romans 7:12), but rather an acknowledgment and voluntary willful implementation of that which is physically beneficial to ourselves (1 Corinthians 6:12). We should not be brought under the power of any food, neither should our God be our belly (1 Corinthians 10:23; Philippians 3:19).

"Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7). The Lord is for your body, but is your body being sanctified and set apart to glorify the Lord? (1 Corinthians 6:13)  Christ the head of the Church, His body, gives the utmost attention to His body to spiritually fill it with all that is needful for it to fully and properly function at its best (Ephesians 1:22-23). When will you be a good steward of the gift of God and do the same with your physical body? Eventually we shall all appear before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account for that which we have done with our body (2 Corinthians 5:10).
